In April 2016 I paired down my wardrobe. It was my capsule wardrobe “warm-up” phase. I was taking it for a test run loosely without committing to any number of pieces. As I got adventurous mixing and matching pieces I realized I needed a way to store each combination as a visual reminder for planning. I also realized I needed a way to keep track of the outfits I wear and when (the specific date/meeting). I attend different meetings on a monthly basis where I see the same people. With a much smaller wardrobe it’s easy to repeat an outfit especially when the meetings are 4 weeks apart. I think people will start to notice if I show up with the same exact outfit every meeting. If you are concerned about this too here are 3 ways to keep track of your capsule wardrobe outfits:
1. Take pictures
Create your complete outfit including shoes, accessories and outerwear. Download to your computer and create two folders. One for all the outfits you create. This will serve as a visual reminder of the outfits you can create. The second folder will hold the outfits you wear and the when. Simply make a copy of an outfit in folder one and paste to folder two then rename the image with the date and event you wore it to.
If you are using the camera on your phone then just create an album for your wardrobe. Create additional albums for the events, occasions or meetings you need to keep track of.
2. Create your own look book
Have your own little fashion show. Call a friend and have her take pictures of you modeling the outfits. Print your pictures on paper and store them in a binder, a notebook, a bullet journal, whatever is convenient for you. Just keep in mind that whichever you choose should have an easy way for you to add the date and the event.
3. Use an app
This one is a little more involved and time consuming upfront. Take pictures of each of the items in your wardrobe. Depending on the app’s features you’ll be able to categorize each item, create outfits or have outfits suggested for you, save outfits to a calendar date, share your outfits with a community and more. It can be a bit overwhelming if you are not using a capsule wardrobe because it’s a lot easier to load 33 items than 200.
This is my favorite option because once the wardrobe items are loaded they are in for good. The transition to a new capsule is easy especially if you are wearing some of the same core pieces. If an item needs to be replaced it’s easy to load the information for that one item, or two, or three; my point is you only need to load the new pieces.
I use Pureple. It’s a free wardrobe app for iPhone. It offers outfit suggestions, calendar, a community to share with or who can suggest outfits for you (I don’t use) and trends (I don’t use). If this is something you wish to explore here is an article where users reviewed different wardrobe apps.
Do you keep track of the outfits you wear in your capsule? What method do you use? Do you use an app? Which one is your favorite and why?
